Students, families and guests are expected to treat CRSS property, facilities and all other related venues with respect.
The CRSS does not provide child-care facilities or services. It is the responsibility of parents to arrange for prompt drop-off and pick-up of students before and after lessons, rehearsals, performances and all other activities.
Any questions regarding individual instruction curriculum or materials should be directed towards individual instructors. If you have reservations regarding any CRSS faculty or staff member, you are encouraged to call the CRSS at 319-366-8206 to make an appointment with CRSS Director Rochelle Naylor to discuss school-related matters in confidence.
Students enrolled in the following programs are entitled to a CRSS Membership Card:
- Suzuki Lessons
- Traditional Lessons
- Chamber Ensembles
- Praeludium Reading Orchestra
- Celtic Ensembles
- Odyssey Chorus and Discovery Chorus
- Coe College Honor Band
The CRSS Membership Card enables students to receive a complimentary ticket to CRSO Masterworks and Chamber Series concerts (Pops not included) as well as other special events.
Students are expected to come mentally and technically prepared for each lesson. In the event that students do not prepare adequately, progress reports are available to our faculty and may be issued at any time throughout the course of the academic year. Faculty members reserve the right to stop a lesson at any point due to a lack of student preparedness or poor behavior.
Students are expected to be respectful of the events and lessons of others occurring within the building. Distraction of other students or activities by any means, including shouting or running in the hallway or stairwells will not be tolerated. The hallway of the second floor is a quiet zone and individuals who speak or act boisterously may be asked to leave by CRSS faculty or staff.
Non-competitive performance opportunities in recitals, concerts and other special events are offered to students who have demonstrated a concerted effort towards such public performances. It is expected that students exhibit appropriate concert etiquette at all times.
Competitive performance opportunities also may arise throughout the course of the academic year and instructors may make students aware of such opportunities. If you are interested in seeking out competitions, please check with your individual instructor.
Students are expected to arrive early enough so that lessons may begin promptly. The instructor is not obligated to make up lost instructional time due to student tardiness. However, if an instructor is late, instructional time shall be made up.
The CRSS reserves the right to cancel or dismiss classes early due to inclement weather. This includes all activities, group and individual, as well as recitals and performances. Individual lessons canceled due to inclement weather will be made up. There is no guarantee that group events, including classes and rehearsals, will be made up. In years past, the CRSS has canceled automatically whenever the Cedar Rapids Community School District has done so. This is no longer the case. If ever in doubt of the closing status of the CRSS, please call the office at 319-363-3960 for cancellation information or watch local television stations for weather-related announcements.
Make-up lessons for student absences are not guaranteed. Please refer to the following:
- If schedule conflicts arise (illness, emergency, other activities) please contact your individual lesson instructor immediately.
- Student-missed lessons will be made up only at the discretion of the instructor on a case-by-case basis.
- Instructor-missed lessons will be made up when reasonably possible (or credited).
- One make-up week is built into each semester of the CRSS calendar in order to facilitate instructor-missed lessons and/or weather-related cancellations.
- Group classes missed for any reason are not guaranteed to be made up, except for Music Together® classes.
Registration in individual lessons is typically made at the beginning of the academic year. Tuition for students who register after the start of the year will be pro-rated according to the start date of lessons.
Individual instruction tuition may be divided into equal, monthly school-year payments. A once-per-family annual registration fee of $25 along with the first tuition payment is due upon registration for most programs (see class descriptions). Tuition payments are due by the first of each calendar month. (Example: payment for lessons received during the month of September should be paid in full by September 1). Payment received after that date is subject to a $5 late fee. Personal checks or money orders should be made payable to "CRSO." A $25 service charge will be assessed for each returned check. Credit card payments are also accepted. Automatic monthly payments can be arranged at the time of registration or by the CRSO finance director at a later time.
The CRSS reserves the right to suspend instruction of students whose accounts are two months past due. Instruction will cease and your teacher will be notified.
Individual lessons will not begin until registration materials have been processed and the first payment and registration fee has been received. Prior overdue balances must be paid at the time of registration.
Those individuals who have chosen monthly billing will receive an invoice if an email address is provided at registration. Monthly invoices for such individuals are generated electronically and continue throughout the year, even if full payment has been received prior to the invoice date. Statements will be mailed for past due accounts only. Please note when payment is due and mail accordingly, or pay in person at the Symphony Center, 119 Third Avenue SE, Cedar Rapids, IA 52401.
A limited amount of financial aid is available for families in need of assistance. Applications are available at the CRSS office or online at www.crsymphony.org. Please contact the CRSS director if you have questions regarding financial aid policy.
Families wishing to terminate a lesson contract or withdraw from individual lessons prior to the originally contracted end date may do so with two lessons' notice. Families wishing to withdraw immediately will be charged for two lessons after the final lesson given. Notice should be given to the individual lesson instructor and the CRSS coordinator.
In the event a lesson contract is terminated early, the final payment may be different than the previously determined monthly amount, depending on the timing of the termination.
Families wishing to withdraw early from the following programs will not be issued a refund for any reason: Odyssey Chorus, Discovery Chorus, Praeludium Reading Orchestra, Music Together®, Celtic Ensembles, Bass Ensemble, Harp Ensembles.
