Rochelle Naylor, Symphony School & Education Director
Rochelle Naylor is a long-time member of the Cedar Rapids Symphony's viola section. For twelve years she was also the CRSO's Operations Director and Music Librarian. Prior to joining the CRSO staff, Rochelle worked as a music therapist and taught both general and instrumental music. Rochelle holds a bachelor of music degree in music performance from The University of Iowa, and she completed her requirements in music therapy and elementary education while a graduate student at the U of I. She is a Registered Music Therapist, and she is also certified with music specialization in elementary education (K - 8).
Karen Liegl, CRSS Coordinator
Karen Liegl holds a bachelor of arts degree from Rockford College, with 6-12 teacher certification. She has served as CRSS coordinator since 1999. She oversees all operational and logistical aspects of the CRSS. Karen writes and distributes the school newsletter, assists with teacher/student placement, processes registration and facilitates communication between CRSS faculty and families and the CRSO staff.

Jessica Altfillisch, Violin/Viola/Suzuki Coordinator/Celtic Ensembles/Music Together®
Jessica Altfillisch is a licensed educator who teaches violin and viola lessons for the CRSS traditional and Suzuki programs. She is also the founder and director of Celtic Ensembles at the Symphony School and serves as Suzuki Coordinator. Jessica has 10 years of teaching experience with all age groups, including students with special needs. Locally she has assisted teachers in many public and private schools with All-State coaching, chamber music rehearsals, beginner summer camps and music appreciation. Jessica earned her bachelor of music degree in viola performance from the University of Kansas. She is currently a master's student in music education at The University of Iowa, where she also completed the Teacher Education Program. She has studied Suzuki pedagogy under Marilyn O'Boyle, William Preucil and Sonja Zeithamel.
Leah Anderson, Piano
An undergraduate piano performance major at The University of Iowa, Leah Anderson has studied with respected Russian pianist Lena Nichols and Rene Lecuona. In addition to an active career in performance and teaching, Leah plans to attend graduate school in piano performance at The University of Iowa. Leah teaches Suzuki piano and provides traditional lessons as well.
Susan Benya, Discovery Chorus Accompanist
Susan Benya serves as an adjunct instructor in music at Mount Mercy College, directs the fourth-eighth grade chorus at Trinity Lutheran School, and is Organist/Choir Director at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church. Dr. Benya holds degrees in organ performance, music education, music and choral conducting.
Gretchen Brumwell, Harp
Gretchen Brumwell is principal harpist of the CRSO and teaches harp and harp ensemble for the CRSS. She is the harp instructor at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and Coe College and the director of the Northern Iowa Summer Harp Workshop at UNI. Gretchen received her master of music degree from Rice University.
Courtney Cameron, Violin/String Outreach Programs
Courtney Cameron holds a master's degree in violin performance from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and received her bachelor's degree from Lawrence University in Wis. She has previously been a member of the Green Bay Symphony Orchestra and the chamber group Sinfonia da Camera. She is currently also a member of the Des Moines Symphony Orchestra and is principal second violin of the Dubuque Symphony. She teaches traditional violin lessons as well as CRSS String Outreach Programs.
Matthew Cameron, Trombone/Low Brass
Matt Cameron is principal trombonist of the CRSO and also teaches low brass at Grinnell College. Holding a bachelor of arts degree from Iowa State University and a master of music degree from the University of Illinois, Matt has had the opportunity to perform with the Des Moines Symphony, Ohio Light Opera, BACH Society of Champaign and Omaha Big Band among others. Currently he is a traditional lesson instructor for the CRSS teaching all low brass instruments.
William Carson, Coe Honor Band
William S. Carson is director of bands at Coe College, where he also teaches clarinet, conducting and music history. Dr. Carson has served as an award winning music teacher for schools in Illinois, Indiana, New Hampshire, Arizona and Iowa. In 1992 Dr. Carson's doctoral dissertation won the Council for Research in Music Education's Outstanding Dissertation Award. Dr. Carson, who is listed in Who's Who in American Education, has extensive experience as a guest conductor, including performances with the United States Army Field Band, the Marine Band of Camp LeJeune and the CBDNA Regional All-Star Band. Over the years, Dr. Carson's travels as a conductor, clinician and performer have taken him to thirty-seven states and fourteen foreign countries. His book, On the Path to Excellence: The Northshore Concert Band-Paynter, Buehlman and Beyond, is published by Meredith Music and is available from the author, through Hal Leonard and online at www.amazon.com.
Alla Cross, Violin/Viola
Alla Cross was raised in Russia. A violinist since the age of six, she received her bachelor's and master's degrees at a music conservatory in Novosibirsk, Russia. As principal of the violin II section of the Krasnoyarsk Symphony she toured in Russia, Germany, Switzerland and Yugoslavia. She worked as a professional musician for several years before moving to the United States in 1999. Currently Alla is in her final year of study for a doctoral degree at The University of Iowa. Alla has led The University of Iowa Symphony and chamber orchestras and has been a member of the CRSO since 1999.
Chrystal Faltis, String Outreach Programs
Chrystal Faltis earned a bachelor of music education degree from Augustana College, Rock Island, Ill. and an elementary education endorsement from The University of Iowa. Postgraduate courses include string pedagogy, conducting and recruiting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and The University of Iowa. Chrystal began her career teaching elementary strings in Ottumwa and since moving to the Cedar Rapids area has taught strings in nearly all of the elementary, middle and high schools. She has taught string methods classes at Coe College and has judged City Contest in Cedar Rapids, Davenport and Waterloo. She plays viola and performs regularly with the Coe College Orchestra, the Iowa City Community String Orchestra and at the Five Seasons Chamber Music Festival.
John Hall, Bass/Bass Ensemble
John Hall is orchestra director at Kennedy High School and has taught as an adjunct instructor and clinician at Cornell College, University of Northern Iowa and Augustana College. He holds a master of music degree in bass performance from the University of Georgia and is completing a doctor of musical arts degree at the University of Memphis. He is currently a bassist in the CRSO.
Mike Hall, Violin/Viola/String Outreach Programs
Mike Hall holds a master of music degree in Suzuki pedagogy from the Cleveland Institute of Music and has done advanced Suzuki training with Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, Doris Preucil, Alice Joy Lewis and Barbara Barber. He is a veteran performer with the CRSO, having played with the orchestra since 1992. Mike teaches Suzuki and traditional violin and viola lessons and is also a teacher in CRSS String Outreach Programs.
Amy Hanisch, Discovery Chorus Director
Amy Hanisch received her bachelor of music degree from The University of Iowa. She has served as a music specialist in Cedar Rapids for the past 20 years. Amy has directed festivals for the Iowa Choral Director's Association throughout Iowa, as well as All-City Choral Festivals for the Dubuque, Cedar Falls and Des Moines districts. She was the 1997 Opus All-State Children's Honor Choir Director. Amy is in her ninth year as director of the Discovery Chorus.
Charles "Andy" Harris, Horn
Andy Harris has been a member of the CRSO since 1995, serving as principal horn since 1998. He performs with the CRSO brass and woodwind quintets and teaches horn at Kirkwood, Coe and Wartburg Colleges and at the CRSS.
Peter Hart, Saxophone
Peter Hart holds a master of music degree in saxophone performance from Eastman School of Music, Rochester, N.Y. Peter played for three years on the S/S Norway luxury cruise ship in the Caribbean. He has played professionally with Ray Charles, The Temptations, The Supremes, 5th Dimension, Clark Terry, Louis Belson, T.S. Monk, Carla Bley, Diane Carroll, Vic Damone, Natalie Cole, Buddy DeFranko and many other touring Broadway shows. Peter is the shop foreman repairing band instruments for West Music in Marion.
Takuya Horiuchi, Violin
Taki, as he is more commonly known to his students, received his bachelor of music degree from Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music, and his master of music degree from The Juilliard School of Music. He has been concertmaster of the CRSO since 1997 and is first violin in the CRSO String Quartet. He teaches private traditional violin lessons.
Cheryl Krewer, Third Grade Strings
Cheryl Krewer has a master's degree in bass from The University of Iowa and Suzuki training in violin and cello from both the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and from the Preucil School in Iowa City. Her experience includes public school string teaching, 14 years of college teaching, many years of private teaching and teaching at the CRSS since 1986. She has performed with the CRSO since 1985. Currently she is the lead teacher for CRSS String Outreach Programs.
Linda Kula, Piano
Linda Kula graduated from Central College in Pella with a degree in music education in piano and voice. Postgraduate studies include The University of Iowa, University of Illinois and Drake University. Her experience includes private instruction and vocal music in the K-12 classroom. Linda began teaching Suzuki piano in 1974, training at Stevens Point, Wis. She has served as a guest clinician throughout the United States and Canada teaching Suzuki piano, repertoire enrichment classes and music theory. Linda has also performed as a vocal soloist in faculty recitals.
Beth Luther, Piano/Voice
Beth Luther holds a bachelor's degree in music education from Michigan State University. She has been playing piano for 23 years as an experienced soloist, accompanist and teacher. Beth worked as the choral director and piano teacher for both Peotone High School and Addison Trail High School in the Chicago, Ill. area, as well as having taught private piano, violin, and voice lessons. She sung with the professional Chamber Singers of Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago, Ill. as well as serving as organist, pianist and choirmaster at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Lansing, Mich. Currently she is a traditional lesson instructor for the CRSS teaching piano and voice lessons.
Kelly Moritz, Violin/Viola
Kelly Moritz received her bachelor of arts degree in music education from the University of Northern Iowa. She has studied Suzuki pedagogy with Doris Preucil, Kimberly Meier-Sims and Sonja Zeithamel. She has been a Suzuki parent accompanying her sons to several Suzuki institutes at Stevens Point, Wis. Aside from teaching privately with the CRSS, Kelly teaches Third Grade Strings at Johnson Elementary School of the Arts and is the orchestra teacher at Taft Middle School. She recently was awarded the Bruce Eilers Award for the Iowa Classroom String Teacher of the Year at the Iowa String Teachers Association convention in May 2006.
Barb Owen, Cello
Barb Owen earned dual degrees in cello performance and music education from Oberlin College. She is a long time member of the CRSO cello section and has been a Suzuki trained cello instructor for the CRSS for more than 15 years. Barb is currently accepting traditional cello students of all ages.
Bärbel Pafford, Cello/Violin
Bärbel Pafford holds a bachelor of arts degree in music education from the University of South Carolina (USC). Throughout college, she taught in the USC String Project, an after-school string program for third through twelfth graders. She taught public school orchestra in Spartanburg, S.C. before moving to Cedar Rapids. Ms. Pafford has performed with many orchestras along with the Palmetto String Trio in South Carolina and is looking forward to joining the playing community in Cedar Rapids with the Cedar River String Trio. With the CRSS, she teaches traditional violin and cello lessons and in CRSS String Outreach Programs.
Karen Pearce, Clarinet
Karen Pearce holds a master of music degree in clarinet performance from Indiana University, as well as a bachelor of music degree in music education and clarinet performance from the University of Tennessee. Karen has been teaching clarinet privately since 1998 and has taught students of all ages. Karen is also a member of "Ensemble Enigma," a clarinet chamber group based in Chicago, Ill.
Sam Stapleton, Violin
Sam Stapleton began playing the violin at the age of five, studying at the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City before earning a bachelor of music degree in violin performance from the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Sam is currently working towards a master's degree in orchestral conducting at The University of Iowa. He teaches traditional and Suzuki lessons and has taught more than 300 third graders in the Third Grade Strings program.
Jennifer Sterner, Violin/Viola
Jenny Sterner is currently an undergraduate student at Coe College, studying viola with Michael Kimber. She has been a student of the Suzuki method for years and has participated in Suzuki institutes for viola and violin at Stevens Point, Wis. Jenny has completed Suzuki teacher training in Books 1 and 2 with Martha Shackford and Book 3 at Stevens Point. Jenny is currently accepting entry level traditional and Suzuki students.
Teri Stuckey, Music Together®
Teri Stuckey graduated from Mount Mercy College, where she earned a bachelor of science degree in elementary education with endorsements in early childhood and reading. She taught first grade for three years, then moved into a pre-kindergarten classroom for six years, where she was able to incorporate music activities into the curriculum. Teri completed the training to become a registered Music Together teacher in the summer of 2004.
Jennifer Wagaman, Flute
Jennifer Wagaman received her bachelor of arts degree from Luther College in flute performance and music management. In October 2006 Jennifer gave her graduate recital at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and in December 2006, she received her master of music degree in flute performance. At Luther and UNI she has been a member of the symphony orchestra, wind ensemble, chamber ensembles and flute choir. After recently moving to Cedar Rapids and completing Suzuki teacher training classes, Jennifer is excited to teach at the Cedar Rapids Symphony School. She currently holds the flute instructor position at the UNI Suzuki School in Cedar Falls and the Preucil School of Music in Iowa City. She has taught flute and piano lessons for over five years to a range of ages.
Pamela Weest-Carrasco/Harp
Pam Weest-Carrasco, plays second harp for the Cedar Rapids and Quad City Symphonies as well as principal for the Southeast Iowa Symphony and University of Iowa Ensembles. Before moving to Iowa City in 1990, she free-lanced in the Washington, D.C. area, playing with the Arlington Symphony and at Ford's Theatre (A Christmas Carol). Her free-lancing has included concerts with Julio Iglesias, Lainie Kazan, Jack Jones, Toni Tenille, the Moody Blues and Josh Groban. She received her music degrees from Indiana University and Suzuki teacher training at the Texas Christian University Suzuki Institutes with Mary Kay Waddington.
Melinda Westphalen, Piano
Melinda Westphalen is an active piano teacher and accompanist. Currently an applied music associate at Grinnell College, Dr. Westphalen has previously taught in Iowa City and at the Conservatory of Piano in Worthington, Ohio. She received both her doctorate and master of music degrees in piano performance from The University of Iowa, where she studied with Rene Lecuona. Melinda is excited to join the CRSS community.
Keri Worden, Odyssey Chorus Director
Keri Worden received her bachelor of music degree from Coe College. She taught general and vocal music for four years before becoming a professional accompanist. She plays piano for Roosevelt Middle School's show choir and many local musicals, contests and recitals. She has served as accompanist for the Odyssey Chorus for the last four seasons and this is her first season as director of this ensemble.
