The Cedar Rapids Symphony Orchestra welcomes Katherine Goeldner, Karla Goettel, Nathan Granner and Jeff Fields, all with their own unique ties to the state of Iowa. Back from her triumphant performances in Europe and the Met in New York, Ms. Goeldner returns to perform Mahler's enchanting song cycle Songs of a Wayfarer-songs of lost love. Violinist John Macfarlane returns home for this performance of Saint Saens' voluptuous 3nd Violin Concerto. Raised and trained in Iowa City, Macfarlane's career has taken him to some of the most renowned orchestras in the nation. Accompanying him in this program are two works that were inspired by the folklore of their respective countries - America and Russia. In anticipation of the holiday season, the concert begins with the music of Ottorino Respighi. Inspired by frescos of Italian Renaissance painter Sandro Botticelli, the music includes a haunting fantasia of the medieval Christmas carol, Veni, Veni Emanuel. This is followed by one of the most famous and beloved guitar concertos of all time. Made famous in the film Brassed Off, amongst others, this piece will touch audiences of all ages and tastes. The sound of alphorns had a profound influence on the music of Johannes Brahms. As a result, his first symphony features some of the most moving solos for the horn in the symphonic repertoire. Therefore, it's only appropriate that this concert also feature one of the finest horn players in the world as our guest soloist. This program begins with a symphonic suite created by local composer Rob Nassif from the score he composed for the Broadway play Hollywood Arms. The play, written by Carol Burnett and her daughter Carrie Hamilton and directed by the legendary Harold Prince, is loosely based on Ms. Burnett's life. It premiered at the Goodman Theatre in Chicago before transferring to Broadway. Pianist Miko Kominami returns to solo with the Cedar Rapids Symphony after her impressive appearance with the orchestra in the Spring of 2007. Antonin Dvorak's most famous work has special resonance for local audiences. Completed in Spillville, Iowa, his 9th Symphony spurred an exploration of the American musical voice amongst U.S. composers, while at the same time displayed a longing for his own Czech heritage.
