CRSO 2007-2008 Masterworks Playlist of Recommended Recordings

Compiled by Alan Lawrence, Principal Timpanist

Welcome to the Cedar Rapids Symphony's Playlist of Recommended Recordings.

Catalog numbers listed here are subject to change (due to reissues, repackaging, etc.); look for the artists and record companies. A few of these choices may be out of print; there is a lively market for used and cut-out (out of print) compact discs and LP records in the classical field.

As in the past, I have tried to list several recordings of high musical merit for each work. For the first year of this column, I tried to list three recordings at three discrete price levels, but I feel that the criteria for inclusion should simply be quality of performance. You will find some recordings on the Naxos budget label, but I needn't apologize for their product. Also, many of the recordings on this list are re-releases from the first decade of stereo, roughly 1955-65, the era of conductors such as Reiner, Szell, Bernstein et al, which are routinely re-released at less than premium price. In many cases, these are still the most highly regarded performances of a given work, in digitally re-mastered sound.

For cut-outs (out-of-print CDs, LPs and cassettes) check Berkshire Record Outlet's Web site (www.berkshirerecordoutlet.com). Most of the recordings listed should be available at local outlets, if not in stock, then by special order. And last, but certainly not least, public and university libraries are an excellent and cost-free way of investigating the world of classical music through recordings.

- Alan Lawrence, Principal Timpanist
